Multispectral Cameras
  • Multispectral cameras work by imaging different wavelengths of light.
  • A multispectral camera is made up of multiple imagers, each with a special optical filter that allows only a precise set of light wavelengths to be captured by that imager.
  • Once processed, the output of the camera data is a set of images where the value of each pixel is equal to percent reflectance of light for that particular wavelength. These sets of images are then stitched together to create geographically accurate mosaics, with multiple layers for each wavelength.
  • Multispectral imaging is used for applications like fluorescence-guided surgery, pathology, or other life sciences applications, food and vegetable sorting/inspection, agriculture and vegetation analysis or weed removal systems, multi-layer electronic circuit board inspection and package inspection, especially printed plastic packages plus much more.

What is an Industrial Camera?


Industrial cameras are designed to be used in machine vision systems and typically images are output in real time to be captured and processed in order to determine a result. Often at high speed and with no human intervention. The applications that use industrial cameras in this way include food processing, manufacturing quality control, packaging, robotics, border control and many more. Industrial cameras are also used in other applications that do not require real-time processing, these include medical instrumentation, speed and red-light cameras, document control and more.

An industrial camera is typically made up of a sensor with circuitry to capture and control images that is designed using an FPGA, a System On Chip or an Application Specific Integrated circuit. Following this there is typically a memory buffer followed by output interface circuitry.

Industrial and Machine Vision cameras are typically designed to be robust, reliable and to use the full bandwidth allowed to them by the output interface for maximum frames per second. The sensors used in industrial cameras in modern times are typically CMOS sensors with a wide variety of features; from low to high resolutions, with global or rolling shutters, colour or monochrome and NIR, with interfaces that include USB, GigE, 5GigE, 10GigE, 25GigE, Cameralink, Coaxpress and some embedded interfaces like MIPI CSI-2, GSML and more.

Industrial cameras typically offer a very granular control capability and features such as asynchronous reset triggering to synchronise to external events, sequence mode to capture a series of consecutive images with different settings, high dynamic range mode and more.

Machine builders who use industrial cameras for machine vision require long product life-times with extended support from manufacturers in order to minimise the cost of ownership. They also require fully featured robust software development kits in order to integrate the cameras into their systems.

Industrial cameras are focused on image quality but not at the expense of the truth. Consumer and surveillance cameras are designed for visual aesthetics whereas industrial cameras are designed to produce real images in which data is accurate and measurable.

Industrial cameras are available as both ccd cameras and cmos cameras and can be used for video security, automated inspection, packaging inspection and many other applications.
