The Award Recognizing the crucial role of science and technology in the movie-making process, the Academy has, almost since its inception, honored the achievements of pioneers whose work have advanced the motion picture industry. The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards is conferred upon those whose discoveries and innovations have contributed in significant, outstanding and lasting ways to motion pictures. The Sci-Tech Awards presentation has become a highlight of the Academy Awards season and takes place a fortnight before the Oscar ceremony. |
This year,
Digital Film Technology and DALSA have distinguished themselves
with the Spirit 4K/2K, which incorporates a continuous-motion transport
mechanism enabling full-range, high-resolution scanning at much
higher frame rates than non-continuous transport scanners. |
The Product The Spirit products are high-speed, high-precision Film Scanners that scan film images in 4K or 2K resolution to convert the film to a digital media format for editing, compositing, distribution, and archival. DFT has installed more than 450 systems of the Spirit family worldwide and is considered the market leader in fast, high end film scanning. |

DALSA's role DALSA has an ongoing, long-term relationship, as an image-sensor-technology provider ,with DFT. The custom-built, dual line scan sensor was
developed specifically to meet Digital Film Technology’s demanding
technical requirements for the Spirit Film Scanners and is a very
high-precision sensor that achieves exceptional image quality.

Custom DALSA line scan sensors power Digital Film Technology's Spirit 4K/2K Film Scanner. | |
In congratulating the DFT team, Gareth Ingram, DALSA's Vice President
and General Manager of Digital Imaging stated that DALSA had been
engineering a high-quality product for 30 years and that they were
extremely proud of their company's association with DFT’s
Spirit 4K/2K film scanner, destined to become the de facto standard
in Digital Intermediate post production systems. |
