NEW! ICON programmable cameras - a solid roadmap for embedded image-processing applications

Teledyne DALSA Icon series: user-programmable cameras
Go to Icon series
Go to Smart cameras
Go to Teledyne DALSA

More than just a camera
Provides vision system developers with unprecedented power and flexibility for customisation

Combining Teledyne DALSA's expertise in sensor technology, cameras and image processing, the ICON series user-programmable, ethernet-based, smart cameras feature high quality, high sensitivity sensors, supporting resolutions from VGA to 1600x1200 in both colour and monochrome. The richly featured Icon gives vision system developers unprecedented power and flexibility to develop their own embedded imaging applications using the Embedded Sapera Vision SDK which lies at the heart of Icon's sophisticated development environment.

Icon cameras are designed for stand-alone operations and to carry out necessary actions with the help of on-board general purpose I/Os and communications using Ethernet or RS232 serial ports. Icon cameras incorporate non-volatile memory to store user applications and can be configured to run on power up without any assistance from a PC. In addition, the cameras feature optimally isolated inputs and outputs for reliable external event synchronisation.

Billed as a camera that has the competitive advantages of size, power dissipation and software, Icon comes pre-licensed and ready to deploy using Sapera Processing tools. It is engineered as an open platform allowing OEMs to develop applications using third-party image processing tools. Considering the ease with which users are able to port their existing code into the Icon embedded processing platform, Teledyne Dalsa anticipate that the Icon series will find use in both traditional and non-traditional machine vision applications.

Hardware platform Advantages
In order to process and analyse images deterministically, the Icon camera features trigger inputs, a 1GHz ARM Cortex -A8, an FPGA, a C64x+ DSP processor and Microsoft Windows CE real-time operating system. In combination with low power consumption and a small footprint this makes the Icon camera series an ideal embedded processing platform.

Software platform Advantages
Users can develop embedded applications using familiar off-the-shelf development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio using Microsoft Windows CE. The Icon camera offers an open-platform to develop embedded applications using either Embedded Sapera Processing or third-party image processing libraries.

About the Embedded Sapera Vision SDK
The Embedded Sapera Vision SDK package is a suite of embedded image-acquisition, processing, analysis and control libraries using conventional programming languages like C/C++. The package also features CamExpert - a field proven camera setup tool - as well as system configuration tools which make it easier to configure, develop, debug and deploy vision applications. Compatible with Sapera Processing libraries for the host Windows PC, the Embedded Sapera Processing features image processing primitives, blob analysis, 1D and 2D codes, OCR, area and geometric search and calibration tools. All Icon camera models are pre-licenced with this package.

About CamExpert
Teledyne DALSA's Camera Configuration Utility is a graphical user interface that provides an interactive environment to create or multi camera configuration files. Icon camera parameters can be fine-tuned while grabbing live images on the host computer. Additionally, CamExpert's intuitive interface allows users to explore and reconfigure camera control signals.
