COVID-19 a major contributor to global Semiconductor shortage

Global Semiconductor Shortage continues to impact Camera lead times

In April 2021 we wrote about the semiconductor shortages that had started in late 2020. Unfortunately the shortages continue and in fact continue to deepen. The industrial sector is not being spared and companies using machine vision and industrial cameras are seeing delays for some models extending to beyond 12 months.

At Adept Turnkey we have worked hard to ensure our machine vision cameras are readily available for our customers and to date we have managed to continue to supply cameras with most sensor types within relatively short lead times. In some cases have had to find substitutes but we have been able to continue supply. It is however an ever-changing scenario and so we ask customers to plan ahead and to contact us as early as possible.

The shortage is worldwide and is affecting all industries. The consensus is that this problem is not going to go away quickly. It will be here for at least the rest of 2022.

Why is this happening?
Demand for semiconductors increased significantly with lockdowns caused by Covid-19. The demand for laptops, TV's and game consoles increased rapidly and significantly.
Production and supply chains were affected during the worst peaks of the pandemic with factories closing, flights cancelled and world trade stifled.
Geopolitics - Trump began to tighten and regulate sales of semiconductors to Chinese companies which led to mass stockpiling of semiconductors for smart phones and other products.
In July 2020 a fire in a Japanese factory created a shortage of fibreglass used for printed circuit boards.
In October 2020 another fire in a factory that manufactures microdevices stopped production which is still halted.

The list goes on with other lesser reasons and they all compound to create the problem we have today.

Manufacturers have strategies and plans in place to alleviate the problem and these are being acted on, but even when production is matching demand it will take time for lead times of all products to return to normal because of the huge backlog that has been created.

If you have concerns about the lead times of machine vision products for your needs now and in the future then please contact us here at Adept Turnkey as soon as possible. Email or call your sales engineer or send an email to info@adeptturnkey.com.au.

We can give you up to date information about the lead times for your products and place early orders if required. Please spend some time planning your production schedules and allow for potentially long lead times.
