Phantom TMX. The pinnacle of high-speed imaging.

The Phantom TMX series of high-speed cameras use a Backside Illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor to achieve maximum sensitivity and unprecedented speeds. The TMX series captures up to 1.75 million frames-per-second (fps). The TMX family is built for applications like Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) Combustion, Digital Image Correlation (DIC), Ballistics and much more.

Increased speed presents a need for increased light
Increased speed brings shorter exposure times and so comes the need for higher light sensitivity. With its metal circuitry partially blocking or reflecting incident light, a traditional Frontside Illuminated (FSI) sensor used in other high speed cameras will have a fill factor (area collecting light/total area of pixel) between 50% and 60%. In contrast, The BSI sensor found in the Phantom TMX series of cameras, effectively moves this problematic metal circuitry out of the way, thereby relocating it to the back of the sensor. By moving the circuitry out of the way, Phantom's BSI sensor found in the TMX cameras has a fill factor of close to 100% and so collect all photons striking the pixel.

BSI provides advantages when it comes to improving low light performance and dynamic range but has been difficult to implement in high speed sensors because of the larger pixel size that is required when constructing a high speed sensor. With Vision Research's capability to design and fabricate their own sensors they have designed a camera family that truly pushes the boundaries with ultra-high speed imaging.

In addition, a great feature that Phantom TMX cameras now offer is a 38ns FAST mode which allows the TMX 7510 and TMX 6410 ultra high-speed cameras to reach a minimum exposure of 38ns.

The video below is a great example of how the Phantom TMX is unrivalled when it comes to capturing rapidly evolving phenomena.

Phantom TMX 7510
The Phantom TMX 7510 has a 75 Gigapixel throughput which can provide over 76,000 fps at a full 1 Mpx resolution of 1280 x 800. All TMX cameras can run with reduced resolutions from maximum to just a few lines. At reduced resolutions Phantom TMX cameras run faster and with the FAST option the TMX7510 runs at 1280 x 32 pixels and 1,750,000 fps.

Phantom TMX 6410
The Phantom TMX 6410 can store high speed image data with a bandwidth of 64 Gigapixel/sec and so captures at over 65,940 fps with its full 1Mpx resolution of 1280 x 800. With FAST Option at 1280 x 32 pixels the TMX 6410 achieves 1,516,000 fps.

Phantom TMX 5010

The Phantom TMX 5010 is Phantom's entry-level version in the TMX series. The TMX 5010 capitalises on the same high sensitivity Back Side Illuminated sensor as other TMX models. The Phantom TMX 5010 has a 50 Gigapixel throughput and provides over 50,725 fps at its full 1Mpx resolution of 1280 x 800. At reduced resolution the TMX 5010 reaches 1,166,660 fps.

Special extended UV variant
All Phantom TMX models are also available in a special extended UV variant. This allows TMX cameras operate in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. The UV variant has over 70% QE at 300nm and its sensitivity also extends out to Near-InfraRed spectrum up to 1000nm. Aside from the Spectral Response Curve, all Phantom TMX cameras with extended UV capabilities maintain the same frame rates, resolutions, modes, Phantom features, FAST options and optical specifications as their standard counterparts.
